Shagnik Chakravarty | INDIA

Shagnik Chakravarty is a fiction writer from Mumbai, studying in year 11 at Wellington High School, in Wellington, NZ.

Q&A

1. What, if any, books are you currently reading?

I am currently reading a novel about the history of Philosophy titled “Sophie’s World” by the Norwegian writer Jostein Gaarder, published in 1994. Another book which I have started reading is a modern medical thriller by Robin Cook called “Cell” - a book particularly dear to me as it was gifted to me by my Biology teacher when I left school in India.

2. Alma Mater(s)?

The school that has nurtured me since my earliest days is Lokhandwala Foundation School in Bombay. I am still bemoaning that rupture even as I look forward to my life in New Zealand where I have just started Year 11 at the Wellington High School.

3. If you could wake up one day with a super power, what would it be?

The ability to time-port myself where my mind would venture into my past or future so that I can be myself at different ages. Through this superpower, I would get the chance of living my life’s best moments all over again.

4. Why do you create?

I create when I feel that my mind is so saturated with ideas and emotions that it cannot take in any more. Through writing, I try to relieve myself and feel temporarily liberated from ordinary existence. As Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life”.

5. Beach or the mountains?

Probably a house facing the mountains near the beach!
